I was born and raised in Tāmaki Makaurau. I remember the rarity of seeing rough sleepers on our streets when I was growing up. Homelessness has now become so common that we, as a society, have almost become accustomed to it. It makes us uncomfortable, and instinct has become to ignore the problem, instead of responsibly holding onto that discomfort to the point that we act to solve the crisis festering in our own backyard, hurting the lives of our people.
I am a huge supporter of the kaupapa and mahi of Lifewise, and am a firm advocate of the Housing First model to end chronic homelessness.
Please help us raise awareness and funds for this crucial work. Housing is a human right, and nobody in New Zealand should be sleeping on the street.
